Health
Karnataka's diverse landscape includes 27,028 inhabited villages alongside 2,362 sparsely populated ones, presenting significant challenges in healthcare accessibility. Among the 2,562 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) available, a majority are situated in suburban regions, which leaves many remote villages underserved. Our motto is to bridge this gap by ensuring that essential healthcare services reach the most vulnerable populations through our comprehensive programs.
We have developed two key approaches for health interventions. The first is curative care, in which running mobile medical clinics, primary health centres, smart clinics, specialized care for endosulfan victims, and both general and specialized health camps are core activities. The second approach is community healthcare activities, which works on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), anaemia reduction, menstrual hygiene, and health awareness programs.

Key Interventions
Mobile Medical Units (MMUs)
​Since 2008, SCODWES has been a pioneer in mobile healthcare delivery, launching Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). These units provide vital medical care to communities with limited access to healthcare facilities, particularly in rural and remote areas. Currently, several MMUs continue to operate, ensuring that essential healthcare services, including diagnosis, treatment, and medication, are available to those in need.
Primary Health Centres (PHCs)
To deepen our impact, we operate Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in underserved regions like Diggi and Castlerock (Joida taluk), providing essential healthcare services to isolated communities. In partnership with NPCIL Kaiga, we established another PHC in Mallapur, improving access to care.
e-LAJ Smart Clinics
SCODWES, in collaboration with the Biocon Foundation, is operating two e-Laj smart clinics in Uttarakannada district. This clinic is equipped with advanced technology that facilitates the creation of computerized patient records, conducts various diagnostic tests, and monitors vital signs. The e-Laj approach aims to deliver data-driven healthcare by utilizing socio-demographic and health indicators obtained from clinical tests.

Primary Health Clinics (PHCs) are being transformed into comprehensive care centres, with systematic documentation of patient data made possible through the e-Laj model. Our smart clinic is staffed by a team comprising a doctor, a lab technician, a data operator, and outreach workers, all trained to manage modern diagnostic equipment and clinic management software. Importantly, this clinic offers healthcare services free of charge to the community.
Endosulfan care
Endosulfan poisoning has left many communities grappling with various health issues and disabilities. SCODWES operates dedicated Mobile Medical Units to provide specialized care, organizes physiotherapy camps, and distributes disability-friendly equipment for affected individuals. Additionally, we offer skill-building programs for victims and their caregivers to promote livelihood opportunities. We also advocate for their needs and connect them with various government entitlements.
Anemia reduction programs
In partnership with various stakeholders, we launched an initiative aimed at combating iron deficiency and anemia among adolescents, pregnant women, and women. As part of this program, we established nutri-gardens in schools to ensure sustainable access to fresh produce for midday meals. Additionally, we distribute tablets and nutri-biscuits, conduct health screenings, promote healthy practices, and implement educational campaigns.
WASH-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
We believe that Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) play a crucial role in community health and dignity. We support communities and schools in accessing safe and clean drinking water and run campaigns for open defecation-free villages. Additionally, we promote menstrual hygiene through awareness campaigns and free sanitary napkin distribution. We are also involved in the construction and renovation of toilets in schools.
Health camps and Awareness Creation
​SCODWES organizes two types of health camps: general camps, which focus on diagnosing common illnesses and special camps that address specific chronic conditions such as cancer, dental issues, and heart diseases. We also develop various materials to raise awareness about important health issues in the community, covering topics like breast and cervical cancer, pregnancy care, menstrual hygiene, childhood malnutrition, and safe drinking water etc.
Vision on wheel
Vision on Wheel is a dedicated mobile medical unit designed to provide essential eye care services to rural communities. With a fully equipped medical team on-board, the unit travels throughout underserved areas, ensuring that individuals who might otherwise have limited access to eye care receive the support they need. Our mobile unit conducts comprehensive eye tests, diagnosing various eye conditions and providing timely medical assistance.

In addition to essential examinations, we offer free eye care glasses to those in need, helping to improve vision and enhance the quality of life for many. This proactive outreach not only addresses immediate eye health concerns but also raises awareness about the importance of regular eye check-ups, empowering communities with knowledge about eye care. Through our Vision on Wheel initiative, we are committed to making eye health accessible, equitable, and effective for all members of the rural population.
